Pollie & Garry Uttley had careers in education as heads of art departments in Derbyshire comprehensive schools. After they each took early retirement at the age of fifty they visited India in November 1995 and were immediately hooked. In January 1996 they made the first of nine return visits and explored south India, including the states of Kerela & Tamil Nadu. During subsequent visits they have explored most of the country by train, reaching Amritsar & the Golden Temple in the north, Kolkata [Calcutta] & Orissa in the east and into Gujarat in the west. It was in Gujarat in 2000 that they conducted a workshop for post graduate ceramic students at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad.

The stimulus provided by these numerous visits is an on going source of inspiration for the work they produce in the form of decorative bowls, dishes and wall panels.

In November 2005 Pollie visited Himachel Pradesh for the first time to take part in a sponsored trek for the charity `Actionaid` which they have supported for many years by sponsoring children's education in India. At the end of the trek, Garry joined her in Delhi where they stayed at the Global Arts Village as Artists in Residence. They left in place a large ceramic wall panel Installation based on a Rajasthani patchwork quilt.
